Rick Perry’s new battle cry: Onward to South Carolina

leave a comment »

Bridget Blueskye’s Take on the Matter, January 5, 2012: Rick Perry is headed for South Carolina next week. And, unlike New Hampshire, Perry will find a warm welcome in South Carolina. Nevermind what happens in New Hampshire, it’s what happens in South Carolina for Perry that counts. By staying in the race after the Iowa caucus fiasco, Perry offers America the only Not Romney candidate who can defeat Obama in November 2012. On Iowa’s Caucus Day Rick Perry is at “mile one” of Marathon Race

Bridget Blueskye’s Take on the Matter, January 3, 2012, Caucus Day in Iowa: Today, Rick Perry prepares for the long haul as Iowa’s caucus day sprints its way toward the finish line tonight. Perry has steadily drawn large crowds during campaign stops in Iowa and his ground game is formidabe. He has reason to be confident about the outcome of the caucus tonight and he is aiming high.

For a report from Iowa, see article from Des Moines Register, posted below.

Perry ready for long haul, he says

“PERRY, IA. — Rick Perry argued with renewed passion on Monday that Iowa is merely “mile one” of a marathon primary season, one his organization is uniquely able to survive — if caucusgoers give him the chance.

“Perry, fifth in The Des Moines Register’s final Iowa Poll at 11 percent, told voters at a Sioux City hotel to look not to the polls, but to their common values.

“Jan Hansen, a teacher from Le Mars, told Perry she’d heard on the news that he wasn’t electable. How could he convince voters to side with him?

“ ‘This is a long election. This is the first, let’s say ‘Mile one’ of the marathon,” he said. “I’ve run a marathon before and I felt great at mile one. As a matter of fact, I felt pretty great at mile 17 and 18. But at mile 21, you start kind of hitting that wall a little bit. And we’ll see who’s still running at mile 21.’ ”

“Hansen said later she had attended events for “ ‘ more electable’ ” candidates, including Iowa front-runner Mitt Romney.

“While she doesn’t approve of attack ads like the ones Perry recently unleashed on fellow candidate Rick Santorum, Hansen left the event with a Perry yard sign.

“ ‘I was undecided until today. And you know what? I almost didn’t come. So I’m glad I did,’ ” she said. “I think that God has spoken to me today.’ ”

“As a testament to Perry’s organization in Iowa, more than four hundred volunteers traveled to Iowa from Perry’s home state of Texas, a get-out-the-vote team the campaign calls its “strike force.”

“If that organization yields a comeback for the campaign in Iowa, Perry said he could take President Barack Obama in November.

“ ‘We will expose him for the fraud that he is every day,’ ” he said. “ ‘I look forward to the opportunity.’ ”

“Another testament to Monday’s all-in effort: Perry brought on a slew of surrogates to back him at events, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, past presidential candidate and businessman Steve Forbes, and Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL and lone survivor of an insurgent attack in Afghanistan that killed several of his teammates.

“When speaking of Luttrell in Sioux City, Perry, an Air Force veteran, grew emotional.

“ ‘He’s a bit of a second son to us,’ ” said Perry, his eyes watering.

“Hansen said after the event that she seen “ ‘more electable’ ” candidates up close, including Iowa front-runner Mitt Romney (“ ‘His bus ran a stop sign. That didn’t impress me one bit,’ ” she said). While she doesn’t approve of attack ads like the ones Perry recently unleashed on fellow candidate Rick Santorum, Hansen left the event holding a Perry yard sign.

“ ‘I was undecided until today. And you know what? I almost didn’t come. So I’m glad I did,’ ” she said, her eyes watering like Perry’s before her. “ ‘I think that God has spoken to me today. When God speaks I get emotional.’ ”

‘For one voter at least, Perry’s appeal to core values came through.

“Last Wednesday, Perry’s campaign came to rest at a small Comfort Inn in Oskaloosa, its two buses and multiple black SUVs visible from the highway. Perry scheduled a Fox News appearance that night and, with little space and few options, transformed the Comfort Inn’s continental breakfast kitchen into a makeshift studio, strategically placing campaign backdrops to hide the juice and coffee machines.

“There he expressed hope that Iowans just might come around to him in the week to come.

“ ‘They’re looking for somebody that knows how to deliver on this economic side, that is an individual who is not going to apologize for being a man of values and character,” he said. “This thing is incredibly fluid. I think there’s going to be some surprises on Tuesday.’ ”

“THE CANDIDATE’S DAY: Perry spoke to a crowd of about 100 at Sioux City’s Stony Creek Inn before addressing a group of about 150 at the Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery in Carroll. He ended his bus tour with a rally for supporters in, of course, the city of Perry.

“TODAY: Perry swings by the downtown offices of Principal Financial Group and Nationwide/Allied Insurance in Des Moines before heading to his caucus watch party at the Sheraton West Des Moines.”

Rick Santorum Gets “Kiss of Death” Tweeted Endorsement

Bridget Blueskye’s Take on the Matter, January 3, 2011: Rupert Murdoch, notorious for his support of Barack Obama, expressed his quite favorable opinion of Republican candidate Rick Santorum on Twitter. I would call that tantamount to planting a Kiss of Death on any Republican candidate who promotes himself as a social conservative.

For what a British newspaper says about it, read the article posted below.

“Rupert Murdoch tweets his support for Rick Santorum as 80-year-old mogul experiments with social network

“By Hugo Gye

“Last updated at 12:00 PM on 3rd January 2012

“As Rick Santorum continues his surprise climb up the polls, he has received support from an unexpected quarter – media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

“”The day before the Iowa caucuses, the News Corporation boss wrote on Twitter that ‘all Iowans’ should ‘think about’ supporting Mr Santorum in the Republican race.

“While Mr Murdoch’s endorsement may not count for quite as much since the phone-hacking scandal engulfed his company, it is still a rare accolade coming from one of the world’s most powerful political figures.

“Support: Rupert Murdoch, left,  [top photo] appeared to endorse Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum

“The veteran businessman appeared to know that his opinion would cause controversy, as he prefaced the message by stating that he ‘can’t resist’ posting it.

“He first hinted at his admiration for Mr Santorum, the former Senator for Pennsylvania who is experiencing a late surge in support ahead of the Iowa contest, in a tweet on Sunday afternoon.

“Mr Murdoch wrote: ‘Good to see Santorum surging in Iowa. Regardless of policies, all debates showed principles, consistency and humility like no other.’ “

Navy SEAL War Hero Campaigns for His Friend RICK PERRY

Bridget Blueskye’s Take on the Matter, January. 2, 2011:  You can tell the quality of the man by the company he keeps. And Rick Perry’s quality as a man is reflected in his friendship with Navy SEAL war hero, MARCUS LUTTRELL, a war hero who prefers a quiet life. But Luttrell steps out into the spotlight for his friend RICK PERRY. Luttrell will campaign beside Perry in Iowa today.

Marcus Luttrell “received the Navy Cross after surviving a vicious 2005 battle in which three of his fellow SEALs were killed when they were discovered inside Afghanistan while pursuing a Taliban leader”. . .  For more about that, go here, http://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2012/01/02/rick-perry-joined-stump-today-navy-seal-helped/joiDbQMU07x37dYJvvkhYP/story.html

Rick Perry Excitement Rising As Iowa Caucus Draws Near

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

RICK PERRY EMERGING AS THE EXCITING CANDIDATE IN IOWA

Bridget Blueskye’s Take on the Matter, January 1, 2012. Rick Perry is drawing crowds of Iowans while Rick Santorum is drawing more reporters than Iowans. Santorum may be the current media darling, but it is Perry who is gaining momentum and increasing favor with Iowa voters.

Read about the “healthy crowds” Perry is drawing in the article posed below, see http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/12/is-rick-perry-the-iowa-dark-horse/250729/

“Is Rick Perry the Iowa Dark Horse?

“By Molly Ball

“Dec 31 2011, 6:33 PM ET
Under the radar, the Texas governor is one of three candidates on an upward trajectory in the final days before the Iowa caucuses.
perryboone.banner.jpg
“BOONE, IOWA — While Iowa-watchers obsess over Rick Santorum’s miniature surge and Mitt Romney’s late strength, there’s one other candidate on an upward trajectory: Rick Perry.
“Aided by millions of dollars’ worth of television ads boosting him and tearing down his rivals, the thoroughly humbled Texas governor has crept up in Iowa polling in recent weeks, improving from his crash-and-burn to reliably score in double digits.
“While Santorum events on Saturday were reportedly drawing more reporters than caucus-goers, Perry was drawing healthy crowds — a couple hundred at a stop here, in the meeting room of the Gigglin’ Goat restaurant. Using notes to get through his stump speech, he was loose and compelling, if not particularly high-energy.
“Two lines in Perry’s speech — when he said he’d defunded Planned Parenthood in Texas, shuttering 12 clinics, and when he called for a part-time Congress of citizen legislators — got enthusiastic applause. He also devoted substantial time to an attack on Santorum’s fiscal record, evidence, if any were needed, of who Perry sees as his principal competition for the cultural conservatives for whom he’s made a naked play. (Perry’s campaign also is airing a radio ad attacking Santorum.)
“Perry pointed out Santorum’s eight votes to raise the debt ceiling, his support for the Medicare prescription drug bill (Perry erroneously referred to it as “Medicaid Part D”) and his history of seeking earmarks. Santorum, he noted, has made a federalism argument to defend the earmarks. “But pork-barrel spending, when senators scratch one another’s backs, is not about federalism. It’s about fleecing the American taxpayer,” he said.
” ‘I raise these issues because, in the end, elections come down to differences,’ ” Perry continued. ” ‘What I’m telling you is that you don’t have to settle for another Washington insider, or anybody who’s trying to tell you they’re conservative but their record’s not that.’ “
“After his 10-minute speech, Perry took questions on the role of government, partisanship in Washington, energy policy, and his controversial support for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants in Texas. He defended that stance, then pivoted to border security, which the crowd liked.
“Perry still comes across as far from a rocket scientist, and his campaign staff is at war with itself, never a good sign. On Saturday, his campaign announced that he’d proceed directly to South Carolina after Tuesday’s caucuses; the move to skip New Hampshire drew unnecessary attention to his lack of appeal beyond the Bible Belt.
“But Perry is still the affable governor of Texas, and voters still want to like him, which has become easier since he’s mostly stopped screwing up all the time. (He did forget the name of a Supreme Court decision this week, but it was no “oops.”)
“As the only truly Southern candidate — the onetime Georgian Newt Gingrich, who does not drawl or say “ma’am,” doesn’t count — Perry has a strong cultural appeal that sets him apart. He rides in to a Toby Keith song, “American Ride” (“Plasma gettin’ bigger, Jesus gettin’ smaller/ Spill a cup of coffee, make a million dollars”). He tells the crowd that the small towns of Iowa are just like the small towns of Texas, where he grew up: ” ‘The same people, the same values.’ “
“As the days to the caucuses wane, Perry has things other candidates would kill for: Crowds who want to meet him, ads all over the airwaves, a decent ground organization, an anti-Washington message people are hungry for, and terrific hair. The question is whether it’s too little, too late, to get through the crowded pack ahead of him.
“Several Perry-inclined voters in Boone said they were former Herman Cain supporters, which helps explain Perry’s uptick.
“Marti Melton-Streeter, the former GOP chairwoman in Boone County, said she couldn’t support Romney because of his health-care record, and she’s frightened by Ron Paul’s foreign policy views. Perry, she recently decided, deserves a second chance with voters.
” ‘I’d really like to see Rick Perry come out of Iowa. I think he needs that opportunity on the national level,’ ” she said. ” ‘I know there have been missteps along the way, but his philosophy is what we need in a candidate.’ “
“Carolyn Erickson, an 81-year-old from Ogden, thought she’d made up her mind to support Romney, but Perry changed her mind.
” ‘I was what you call impressed” with Romney when she saw him Thursday, she said. ” ‘ Today, I’m excited. I feel a passion for [Perry].’ “
“But at least one audience member experienced a different conversion. Loren Nalean, 61, a Boone attorney, said Perry convinced him to caucus — for Romney. ” ‘I just think he’s more intelligent and more sophisticated than Governor Perry,’ ” he said.”

Rick Perry’s Iowa Ground Game Is “Robust” and Just Keeps Getting Better

with 2 comments

CNN reports this afternoon, December 31, 2011, that Rick Perry’s ground game in Iowa is robust.

Bridget Blueskye’s Take on the Matter: Yes, it IS robust and growing more robust by the hour as droves of Rick Perry’s energized and confident supporters arrive in Iowa and hit the ground running.

TRENDING: Perry bets Iowa fortunes on robust ground game

“Boone, Iowa (CNN) – Even as they grapple with mediocre poll numbers, a gaffe-prone candidate and internal staff feuding, Rick Perry’s advisers are confident that a top-three caucus finish is within reach on Tuesday.

“The reason? Organization. Aside from Iowa frontrunners Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, Perry is thought to be the only Republican candidate here with the kind of sophisticated ground game to pull off a much-needed comeback.

“And with public and internal polling from various campaigns showing the fight for third place to be a fluid one between Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Perry, a robust organization can mean the difference between a ticket home and a ticket to New Hampshire.

“There are 1,774 Republican caucus precincts around the state, 900 of which are combined and held at the same location.

“As of Friday, the Texas governor had signed up 1,500 precinct leaders in Iowa, a source inside the Perry campaign told CNN.

“The source requested anonymity because staffers are not authorized to reveal the information.

“The Perry camp also has 470 out-of-state volunteers descending on Iowa this weekend (including Perry’s own family, which flew in on Friday).

“The source said that by caucus night, “we will easily have over 2,000 Perry volunteers” fanning out across the state knocking on doors and speaking for Perry at their voting sites.

“That means roughly 95% of caucus locations will hear from a representative from the Perry campaign on Tuesday night, the source added.

“Campaigns in Iowa do not typically reveal their precinct leader figures, mainly to keep caucus night expectations in check.

“But those leaders – regular men and women who sign up with a campaign to speak for their preferred candidate at their local precincts – play a crucial role on caucus night.

” ‘The best example of organization on caucus night is who the candidates have as their surrogate speaker in their precincts,” said Iowa Republican Party chairman Matthew Strawn. “When you have a third of the electorate persuadable to change, the people they have standing up in each precinct for their candidate becomes real important.’ “

“The Romney campaign will not share its number of precinct captains, and the Paul campaign has closely guarded the details of its grassroots operation.

” ‘We don’t share any of that information,’ ” Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton said.

“Santorum’s late-blooming campaign, which is hoping for a more organic turnout based on the candidate’s appeal to social conservatives and evangelicals, was more forthcoming.

” ‘We have over 1,000 precinct captains,’ ” Santorum campaign manager Mike Biundo told CNN earlier this week, a number that could spike in the wake of his late surge in the polls.”

Bridget Blueskye’s Take on the Matter: RICK PERRY IN IOWA, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Rick Perry is reaching out to the “Undecided” Iowa caucus voters. And his climbing poll numbers show that Iowans are clearly liking what they see in Perry. Meanwhile, Perry is pegging Rick Santorum accurately as an earmarking porker during his years in the US Senate. (See linked LATimes article.)
